KeepCup

KeepCup strive for sustainability and aim to help reduce organisation’s and customer’s environmental foot print. I bought my husband a KeepCup a couple of years ago and he has raved about it ever since, which is rare as he is usually ridiculously critical over product designs. So when I was lucky enough to receive a Keep Cup from the fabulous ethical sourcing tea company Tea Pigs I was over joyed I finally had my own and could now fully reap the benefits of a KeepCup.

The KeepCup is the first Barista standard reusable cup, which replicates correct Barista volumes. There are 5 different sizes, ranging from 120ml to 440ml. So no matter what your usual coffee size order is there is a KeepCup for you. When ordering in a coffee shop you simply hand over the cup and fit the lid after. I have found this the quickest and easiest way as the lid can sometimes throw Baristas, as it doesn’t have a noticeable click feature. Be reassured though, the lid is hand fitted meaning the seal is perfectly tight and well secured. You can physically run for a bus and not a drop of your precious coffee would be spilt.

Not only is KeepCup made from non toxic plastic and is BPA/BPS free but there is enough plastic in 28 disposable cups to make one small KeepCup. Every part of the cup is recyclable when it does eventually come to the end of it’s life but you can also buy replacement parts, which I think is fantastic and adds to the product’s life span.

The lid is made from hard durable plastic, which I much prefer to silicone, as it doesn’t attract stale coffee smells and tastes. I’ve had numerous different types of reusable coffee cups and this is the only one that doesn’t retain previous tastes and smells. This makes it perfect for switching between coffee and tea, including herbal tea.

The plug on top of the lid is easily detached for giving a thorough wash and keeps the drink hotter when set to closed. Please be aware that KeepCup recommend you keep the plug switched to open when you have hot contents, due to the build up of pressure. I have been keeping it open, until the initial steam has left and then closing it when I am travelling to work and the contents are kept hot, 20 minutes later. The glass cup and cork band also keep the drink hot, even though it is not strictly an insulated product. The glass cup has proved itself to be extremely resilient. My husband hasn’t treated his KeepCup with the same respect I have but he has definitely put it’s durability to the test by leaving it to roll around in his car and stashing it into his work bag and it hasn’t even got a scratch on it.

The cork band is made from sustainable Portuguese oak forests, which supports biodiversity and is 100% biodegradable. One of my concerns with the cork band was how difficult it would be to keep clean. I was amazed when I found out it was antibacterial and it has washed amazingly well, even by hand. Even though, KeepCup state it is dishwasher proof I wouldn’t recommend putting in the dishwasher, as the lifespan will be reduced. If your anything like me and want to stretch the durability of a product it is best to hand wash it. Every part of the cup is completely detachable and super easy to wash. If you’re still not convinced by the cork look you can choose from a range of other designs including limited edition versions such as Star Wars.

For you savvy money savers you’re probably questioning whether it is worth the cost, as the cup currently retails at around £20 for a medium size. However, many coffee shops will give you a discount if whip out your KeepCup, which means the cup will pay for itself. There has even been reports of some shops offering free drinks!

If you believe many small acts will make a phenomenal difference or you’re looking to be an every day change maker this is a fantastic product for you. I have finally found a coffee cup which is practical, durable, fully reusable and recycle but doesn’t compromise on style or attractiveness. The only negative is you have to train your brain to remember to pick it up when using it in a coffee shop or cafe!

Let me know in the comments if you have become discovered the benefits of becoming a KeepCup owner.
